Medical Assistance in Dying
The American Association of Suicidology recognizes the complex considerations surrounding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). AAS is committed to providing clarity within the broader context of suicide prevention, emphasizing the importance of careful assessment, safeguards, and distinctions between end-of-life decision-making in the context of terminal illness and suicidal ideation.
Death with Dignity
Suicide and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) are conceptually, medically, and legally different phenomena, with an undetermined amount of overlap between these two categories. Our mission is to prevent suicide; however, MAID has no bearing on the reflective, anticipated death a physician may legally help a dying patient facilitate.
