Timothy W. Lineberry, M.D.
Board Chair
Timothy Lineberry earned his M.D. at Vanderbilt University in Nashville in 1991, and completed his residency in Psychiatry at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas in 1995. He is currently the Chair of the inpatient division, Department of Psychiatry, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He is also Medical Director of the Mayo Psychiatry and Psychology Treatment Center. Dr. Lineberry is course director for Mayo’s second year medical school course in psychotherapy. He previously served 12 years in the U.S. Air Force.
James R. Rogers, Ph.D.
AAS President
James R. Rogers earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Akron in 1993. He has since taught in the Department of Counseling at Youngstown State University, is currently an adjunct professor of behavioral sciences at The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and a professor in the Collaborative Program in Counseling Psychology at The University of Akron. Dr. Rogers is a licensed psychologist in the state of Ohio and has specialized in the areas of suicide and disaster relief psychology.
Peter M. Gutierrez, Ph.D.
Past President
Peter Gutierrez is a Psychologist at the Denver VA Medical Center’s Mental Illness Research, and Education Clinical Center, and Adjoint Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Prior to that he was a tenured Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and Assistant Chair of the Psychology Department at Northern Illinois University. He is a recipient of AAS’s Shneidman Award for outstanding contributions in research in Suicidology and has served as Director of the AAS Research Division. He holds a B.A. in psychology from Winona State University, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan.
Michelle Linn-Gust, Ph.D.

Michelle Linn-Gust is an international author and speaker about suicide prevention and postvention issues. She is the author of Ginger’s Gift: Hope and Healing Through Dog Companionship. Her first book, based on the suicide of her younger sister Denise, Do They Have Bad Days in Heaven? Surviving the Suicide Loss of a Sibling, inspired siblings around the world in their survival after a loved one’s suicide. She is the former AAS Survivor Division Chair and former editor of AAS's Surviving Suicide. She earned her doctorate in family studies from the University of New Mexico.
Alan L. Berman, Ph.D., ABPP
Ex Officio Member, AAS Executive Director
Lanny Berman has served as Executive Director of AAS since 1995. Prior to that, he was Director of the National Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the Washington School of Psychiatry (1991-1995) and a tenured full-professor of Psychology at American University (1969-1991). He currently (2009-2011) serves as President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Lanny has published 7 books, the latest being the 2nd edition of Adolescent Suicide: Assessment and Intervention, and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in Suicidology and suicide prevention. He is the recipient of both AAS’s Shneidman and Dublin Awards for outstanding research contributions to Suicidology and to suicide prevention and a past-president (1984-1985) of AAS. Board certified as an ABPP diplomate in clinical psychology, he is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the International Academy of Suicide Research. He holds a BA degree from the Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America.
Amy Boland
Treasurer
Amy Boland is an audit partner at Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman, CPAs. She has more than 12 years’ experience in auditing and public accounting, having concentrated her skills in the specialized field of audits of nonprofit organizations including associations, private voluntary organizations and other charitable institutions. She has performed audits on behalf of most federal agencies, most frequently for USAID grantees and with our international PVO team to assist clients with global activity in strengthening field office controls and establishing policies and procedures to ensure grant compliance. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at the Pennsylvania State University. Ms. Boland is a member of the AICPA and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is active in the nonprofit community.
Doreen Marshall, Ph.D.
Secretary
Doreen is a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia. A survivor, she has served as Program Chair of the AAS Annual Conference in 2005 and in 2008, and as AAS' Student Representative from 2002-2004. She is also a trainer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Irving Gutin (Retired)
Irving was head of Mergers and Acquisitions at Tyco International, Ltd, from 1979 to 2003. During his tenure Tyco grew from $200 million in annual sales, to a multinational, Fortune 100 Company, with sales of over $40 billion, employing over 250,000 people worldwide. Irving was Chairman of the Board of the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, a member of the investment committee of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and a member and Chairman of the Board of the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He has served as a member of the board of a number of publicly traded and private companies. In 1995, after the loss of his son, by suicide, the Gutin family established the Jeffrey Gutin Fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. He and his wife Barbara also established the Irving and Barbara C. Gutin Charitable Foundation. The two funds have joined together as the Suicide Prevention Partnership, (SPP) which works to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior. The SPP designs and runs programs that address systemic issues in suicide prevention and funds a limited number of suicide prevention projects, including a current grant to AAS.
Eric Hipple
Eric Hipple spent 10 years as quarterback of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, earning two playoff bids and a divisional championship. He was named Most Valuable Player for the 1981 season and he is ranked fifth in all-time career passing yards in the Detroit record books. After his football career, Eric worked as a freelance sports field reporter and as an analyst for the Fox Network’s local pre-game show from 1995 – 2000. Since his retirement from the Detroit Lions, Eric has been a professional motivational speaker and works as a sales consultant. Eric’s public speaking work shifted to topics of depressive disorder awareness and treatment, and to suicide prevention in 2000, after the tragic suicide of his 15-year-old son. Eric currently serves on the board of Michigan’s Mental Illness Research Association (MIRA) and in program development with the University of Michigan’s Depression Center. He attended Utah State University and earned a BA in business administration with a computer science option.
Terry Wise, J.D.
Terry Wise, since being widowed at 35 by the tragic death of her husband from ALS and her own nearly-fatal suicide attempt, has devoted her life to full-time writing and public speaking on topics related to depression, grief, long-term care-giving, suicide prevention, and the process of recovering emotional health. She is the author of Waking Up: Climbing Through the Darkness, a highly-acclaimed book that provides a roadmap for the restoration of emotional health. A former trial attorney,Terry is the recipient of a National Mental Health Award for “distinguished achievement and work that has had a major impact on the depression community.” Chosen by an independent panel of mental health experts, this award is given to “an individual whose noteworthy public efforts have helped promote the understanding of depression and reduce the shame and guilt associated with the illness.” Terry holds a BA degree from the University of Massachusetts and a J.D. degree from the New England School of Law.
Annalisa Jenkins, MBBS, MRCP
Dr. Jenkins, currently a Vice President of Drug Development at Bristol Myers Squibb, is noted as being the first female Medical Officer to serve in front-line conflict for the British Royal Navy. Chairman of the BMS Foundation's Women’s Health Program, she is a member of several councils and review boards.
Jill Nyhus
Jill is the Director of Technology in the Chancellor's Office for the District of Columbia Public Schools. She brings a wealth of web-based marketing, communication, and Internet strategy experience to AAS. Prior to joining DC Public Schools, she worked as a project manager in the cable industry and for a web development company. She was an elementary school teacher before entering the world of technology full-time. Jill earned a Master of Arts in Educational Technology Leadership at George Washington University and holds an undergraduate degree from Wheaton College (IL).
Kelly C. Cukrowicz, Ph.D.
Research Division Director
Kelly is Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, at Texas Tech University where she is Director of their Suicide and Depression Research Program. She also serves on the faculty and is a clinical supervisor for Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program graduate students. Kelly is a member of several professional organizations, and has served as Annual Conference Program Chair. Kelly's research includes investigating risk factors for suicide in late life, and she is the author of over 23 scientific publications.
Bill Schmitz, Jr., Psy.D.
Clinical Division Director
Bill is a Clinical Psychologist with the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. He is the Chair of the AAS Publications Review Committee, and was the Program Chair of the AAS Annual Conference, Miami, FL, in 2004. Bill also serves as a member of the AAS web strategy committee. He has experience in suicide prevention, outreach, program development, education, and postvention.

Scott Poland, Ed.D.

Director of department of psychological services (1982-present) for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD a school district of 75,000 students in Houston, Texas. Under his leadership, the department has been named Most Outstanding Psychological Division by Texas Psychological Association four times, and has received the Excellence in School Psychological Services Award presented jointly by National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and American Psychological Association (APA). In addition, the department has an APA accredited professional psychology intern training program.
Sally Spencer-Thomas, Psy.D.
Survivors Division Director
The survivor of her brother’s suicide in 2004, Sally is a clinical psychologist and the Executive Director of the Carson J. Spencer Foundation. She's also served as project director for Regis University’s Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grant, board member of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado, on the Suicide Prevention Resource Center's steering committee, and as Chair of "Bridging the Divide: Suicide Awareness and Prevention Summit" in 2008 and 2009. She is a professional speaker with Campuspeak, and certified as a QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Trainer.
Susan Beaton
International Representative
Susan is the National Suicide Prevention Coordinator for Lifeline Australia. She is a psychologist with 20 years experience in suicide prevention working for the non-profit sector in training, education, service delivery, project management, and board representation. Susan is a member of the Australian National Advisory Council on Suicide Prevention's Community Expert Forum, a member of the IASP Postvention Task Force, and a volunteer with Lifeline.
David Knesper, M.D.
Member At-Large
David is Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Michigan Medical School and Health System. He is a member of the AAS Clinical Expert Task Force and an AAS Certified Crisis Worker. David is Director, Section of Hospital and Community Psychiatry that includes Psychiatry Emergency Services for all ages, Adult Psychiatry Inpatient Services, Psychiatry Consultation Services for inpatient with general medial conditions, and liaison with community mental health programs. He is a Senior Attending Psychiatrist with extensive experience working with suicidal patients and their families.
